Requirements for setting up an Automation Flow within Mailchimp
You will need to have a fully functioning Mailchimp account on the Essentials plan or above. Mailchimp's Free plan will not allow the use of their Automation Flow feature:
You will also need the Happy Birthday app installed into your Shopify store.
Setting up the Automation Flow
We recommend using Mailchimp's birthday template as a starting point. Navigate to Automations > Flow Templates and locate the Celebrate customer
birthdays template.
This is how the template will look when first opened:
Choose a date
In the example below, we have chosen 0 Days Before Date, so that the automation will trigger on the actual birthday.
The Date Field is automatically populated with Birthday when using this Mailchimp Flow template.
We also recommend using the Filter who can enter this flow option to ensure that only those contacts with a Birthday Discount Link associated with their profile, can receive the Birthday email.
Click the filter option and select Birthday Discount Link > is not blank:
Create an Email
Whether you decide to create your email now, or use a saved template, it is important to make sure that your Mailchimp Merge tag for the Birthday Discount Link
*|BDAYLINK|*
...has been included within the Web address (URL) field of the button inside your email template:
Adding the Birthday Discount Link Merge tag ensures that when a customer clicks the button in their birthday email, they'll be directed to their unique Birthday Discount Page known as the Generate Discount Page.

Save your Flow, make it live
The 3rd action Add tag is optional, so you may decide to remove it or perform a different action.
The Birthday Automation Flow is ready and can be made live. Your Birthday Club sign-ups will now receive their Birthday email from Mailchimp.
