With the Birthday Profile Capture extension, customers can add their birthday themselves, with no forms, pop-ups, or manual data entry required.
What is it?
Our Birthday Profile Capture app block is a Customer Account extension that adds a Birthday section to your customers' profile page. When a customer logs into their account on your store and visits their profile, they'll see the option to add their birthday using a simple date picker.
Once they save their birthday, it's automatically written to your Happy Birthday app and, if configured, to the associated birthday metafield on the customer record.
This gives your customers a new, self-service way to join your Birthday Club, alongside any other sign-up methods you're already using.
Requirements
To use this feature, your store must be using Shopify's Customer Accounts (the newer account experience, not the legacy "classic" customer accounts). If you're not sure which version you're on, you can check under Settings → Customer accounts in your Shopify Admin.
How to set it up
Open the Customer Accounts editor
In your Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Checkout → Customer accounts, then click Customize to open the Customer Accounts editor.
Alternatively, you can reach the editor from the top navigation bar. Look for the page selector dropdown (it may say "Checkout" or another page name) and select Profile from the Customer accounts section.
Add the Birthday Profile Capture block
In the editor sidebar, under the Main section of the Profile template, click Add block.
You'll see a list of available blocks from your installed apps. Look for the Happy Birthday section and select Birthday Profile Capture.
Customise the block settings
Once the block is added, you can customise the text that your customers see by clicking on the block in the sidebar. The following settings are available:
Heading
The heading displayed above the birthday section. Defaults to "Birthday".
Add button label
The label for the button when no birthday has been set. Defaults to "Add".
Edit button label
The label for the button when a birthday already exists. Defaults to "Edit".
Empty state text – The text shown when no birthday has been provided. Defaults to "No birthday provided". This is a great place to encourage customers to join your Birthday Club. For example, you could change this to something like "Add your birthday to join our Birthday Club!"
Saved confirmation – The toast message shown after a customer saves their birthday. Defaults to "Birthday saved!" You could use this to set expectations, for example: "Birthday saved! You'll receive a birthday treat from us each year."
Please note:
All of these fields are optional. If left blank, the defaults will be used.
Position and save
You can use the arrow buttons to move the block up or down within the Profile page layout. We recommend placing it near the top of the profile, just below the customer contact details, so it's easy to spot.
Click Save in the editor to publish the change.
What your customers will see
When a customer logs into their account and navigates to their Profile page, they'll see a Birthday section. If they haven't added a birthday yet, it will show your empty state text (or "No birthday provided" by default) with an Add link.
Tapping Add opens a simple date picker where they can enter their month, day, and year of birth. After clicking Save, their birthday is recorded and they're part of your Birthday Club.
Customers can also edit their birthday after it's been saved. However, customers are still limited to one birthday email per calendar year. Changing the date won't trigger an additional birthday email if one has already been sent for that year.
Where does the birthday data go?
When a customer submits their birthday through the Profile page, the data is written to the Happy Birthday app and, if you've configured a birthday metafield in your app settings, to that metafield on the customer record as well. By default, this is the standard facts.birth_date metafield, but if you've configured a different metafield in your Happy Birthday app settings, it will use whichever one you've set.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to do anything else after adding the block? No. Once the block is added and saved in the editor, it's live. Customers with accounts will see it on their profile page straight away.
Will this work alongside my other birthday sign-up methods? Yes. Birthday Profile Capture is an additional sign-up channel. It works alongside any other methods you're using to collect birthdays, such as signup forms, checkout fields, or manual entry.
What if a customer changes their birthday? Customers can edit their birthday, but they're still limited to one birthday email per calendar year. Changing the date won't allow them to receive a second birthday email in the same year.
Do customers need to be logged in? Yes. The Birthday section appears on the customer's account profile page, so they'll need to be signed in to their account to see it.
I'm still using classic customer accounts. Can I use this? This feature requires Shopify's newer Customer Accounts experience. You can check which version your store uses under Settings → Customer accounts in your Shopify Admin. If you'd like help switching, Shopify's documentation covers the migration process.
