How to enable follow-up birthday emails

This article is specifically aimed at Merchants using the Happy Birthday app to send out their Birthday emails.

What is the follow-up birthday email feature?

Whilst your Birthday Email Campaign is an excellent way to show customers how much you appreciate their business by wishing them a Happy Birthday, you will also want to make sure that they are re-entering into the buying cycle by using their birthday discount code.

With the follow-up birthday email feature, you can now automatically send a single but timely email reminder before a birthday discount code expires. It will only be sent out if the birthday discount has not already been used.

The follow-up birthday email can either be the same as the original birthday email, or, you can choose to modify the message, banner image, terms and conditions and styling. It will contain the same discount code information as per the original birthday email.

The follow-up birthday email feature is disabled by default, but it can be enabled on any Happy Birthday plan via the Birthday campaign editor at no extra cost.

There are, however, a few requirements for the follow-up birthday email feature to work, so let's take a look at those next.

Requirements and limitations

  • You must be using the Happy Birthday app to send out your Birthday Email. If you are using Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Brevo, Shopify Email or Omnisend to send out your Birthday emails, unfortunately, you will not be able to use this feature.

  • You must be using our auto-generated discount code feature as its expiry and usage can be tracked within the Happy Birthday app

Follow-up birthday email settings and styling

The follow-up birthday email feature has very similar settings to the main birthday email campaign settings. We have added in the ability to mirror some of the settings from the main birthday email campaign so that they can automatically be used within the follow-up birthday email settings.

To begin editing the settings and style of your follow-up birthday email, go to the Happy Birthday appYour campaign and select the Manage follow-up email

This will open the Follow-up email settings within the Birthday campaign editor:

Status

By default, the follow-up birthday email feature is disabled. We recommend customising your follow-up birthday email settings before enabling this feature.

Email Setup

By default, we will pull in the same details from your birthday email campaign settings. If you uncheck the "Mirror my Birthday Email Campaign Setup" checkbox, you will then be able to enter a different From Name and Reply-To Email should you need to:

Email Subject

We have provided some default wording for the Email Subject. Tweak or change the wording of the subject to suit your business.

Personalisation of the Email Subject is also possible as a merge tag (see our article on personalising the Birthday Email for more information on how to use these merge fields).

Email Content

We have provided some default wording for the Email Title and Email Content that appear in the main body of the follow-up birthday email. Tweak or change the wording used to explain that the recipient's birthday discount code is about to expire.

Email Banner

By default, the email banner image from your birthday email campaign settings will be selected to use for your follow-up birthday email. If you'd prefer to upload a different image, then just uncheck the Mirror my Birthday Email Banner checkbox and you will be able to upload a unique image:

Email Styling

We provide a simple follow-up birthday email template with a few settings that can be tweaked to suit your branding and messaging.

The email template is set to a maximum width of 600px.

By default, the email styling from your birthday email campaign settings will be selected as the styling for your follow-up birthday email.

If you'd prefer to change the styling for your follow-up birthday email, then just uncheck the Mirror my Birthday Email styling checkbox and you will be able to customise the styles:

If you choose to customize the styles, you can control the following elements of the follow-up email:

  • Button Background Colour

  • Button Text Colour

  • Email Background Colour

  • Email Font Colour

  • Email Text Alignment

  • Email Text Size

Terms and Conditions

By default, the Terms and Conditions from your birthday email campaign settings will be selected for use in your follow-up birthday email.

If you'd prefer to change these for your follow-up birthday email, then just uncheck the Mirror my Birthday Email Terms and Conditions checkbox and you will be able to enter a new set of Terms and Conditions.

Sending date and time

Please note:

The follow-up email will only be sent if the discount code has not already been used.

There are two options available for when to send the follow-up email:

1. Send x days before the discount expires

The follow-up email will be sent this many days before the birthday discount expires.

Select your preferred number of days:

2. Send x days after the birthday email

The follow-up email will be sent this many days after the initial birthday email was sent out:

Send Time

You can choose to send the follow-up email at a specific hour in the day based on your timezone: (GMT+00:00) Europe/London

Discount code

The unused discount code will also be included in the follow-up birthday email.

It will be in the same format as specified within the Discount code options within your main birthday email campaign.

Whether you've chosen for the customer to copy the discount code from the email and paste it into the checkout, or if you've chosen for the discount code to be applied directly from the birthday email, that setting will automatically be mirrored to the follow-up birthday email settings.

That's It!

Hopefully the follow-up birthday email feature has been very simple to set-up.

Any existing birthday discounts that have not yet been used and meet the conditions specified within your email send time settings will be sent out at the time you have specified.

Log in regularly to the Happy Birthday app to monitor the conversion rate of your Birthday Email Campaign to see how it improves over time.
